Baked Tofu with Buffalo Sauce

Marinated, breaded and and then baked, this tofu is juicy and full of flavour. Serve it on a crunchy and creamy, fresh celery slaw that compliments the spicy warm flavours in the tofu perfectly.


Marinating Time: 10-30 min

Prep Time: 20 min

Bake time: 25 min

Yield: 4 servings


Ingredients

Tofu

  • 1 350g block extra firm tofu

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce

  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1 egg

  • 1 lemon, zest and juice

  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs

  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese

  • 1/3 cup harissa sauce

  • 2 tbsp cholula hot sauce

  • 2 tbsp maple syrup


Celery Slaw

  • 6-8 stalks of celery

  • 1/4 cup plain yogourt

  • 2 tsp olive oil

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • 2 tbsp minced fresh parsley

  • 2 tbsp minced fresh dill


Directions

Tofu

  1. Slice the tofu into four rectangular slabs and place in a shallow dish. Add soy sauce and the juice of half a lemon to dish with the tofu. Allow the tofu to marinate in the soy sauce and lemon juice for 10 to 30 min, flipping the tofu slabs half way through the marinating time.

  2. Pre-heat the oven to 425F and prepare three shallow dishes for coating and breading the tofu.

  3. In the first shallow dish, stir together the flour, salt, paprika and garlic powder.

  4. In a second, smaller shallow bowl, whisk one egg with 1 tbsp of water.

  5. In the third, mix together the breadcrumbs, parmesan and zest of the lemon.

  6. Remove a marinated tofu slice and place in the flour mixture, coating all sides evenly. Transfer to the egg and wet all sides. Finally place the tofu in the breadcrumb mixture, flip and coat all sides.

  7. Place the breaded tofu slice on a parchment lined baking sheet and repeat with the remaining tofu.

  8. Drizzle each slab of tofu with a bit of olive oil and bake in the pre-heated oven for 15 min. Flip and bake for a further 10 min.

  9. While the tofu is baking prepare the buffalo sauce by combining the Harissa sauce, Cholula and maple syrup. Pour in a flat bottomed dish that the tofu slices can lay flat in.

  10. Prepare the celery slaw by slicing the celery and mixing all the celery slaw ingredients together with the celery in a small bowl.

  11. When the tofu is done baking, remove each slice and dip both sides in the buffalo sauce. Serve on the top of a few spoonfuls of celery slaw & enjoy.

  • The buffalo sauce we made is only a recommendation. You can even use your favourite BBQ sauce!

  • This would also be great served on a bun with a creamy coleslaw and some pickled onions.

  • We also think you could substitute the buffalo sauce for caesar salad dressing and serve as you would chicken on a chicken caesar salad.
